Northern Graduate Innovates Along the Road to Success

September 19, 2018

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is very pleased to see the continued success of a local Business Management program graduate.

Anthony Gilin is the President of Mine Safety Solutions, a company striving to make worksites safer with a fresh approach to safety equipment. Gilin’s safety gloves combine state of the art technology with comfort and usability to provide a reliable, wearable protection.

Shortly after graduating from Northern College in 2015 Gilin founded Mine Safety Solutions; its products are partly inspired by a workplace injury he sustained while working as a labourer.

“A few years ago, I had a 150 pound bar that came down on my hand, causing a fracture in my finger, I was just wearing leather gloves, that don’t provide any impact protection, stated Gilin. “MSS safety gloves offer impact protection, by wearing our gloves this incident wouldn’t have happened. “

Gilin’s products will be travelling abroad, on the hands of the Tahoe Resources Mine Rescue team as they travel to Russia for the World Mine Rescue Competition.

“They really think the gloves are comfortable,” stated Dana Backer, Health and Safety Coordinator for Tahoe Resources Bell Creek Complex. “They like the fact that they are light weight and form fitting.”
In the fast paced, high stakes world of competitive mine rescue, dexterity and usability are essential in the work of saving lives hundreds of feet underground. Gilin believes the safer he can make workers, the more innovative his company can be. This will also allow for future expansion for Mine Safety Solutions throughout Northern Ontario, and providing an economic impact in the region

“I think it’s quite important to always keep innovating safety equipment or safety products, especially in the North,” said Gilin. “Frankly a lot of jobs are going down south and if we can create that industry here, we can thrive.”

Northern College graduates continue to do their part to make an impact on the global front to better the world around them, and the college proudly supports the success of our Alumni.

“Anthony is but one example of the many Northern College graduates who have gone on to achieve some very remarkable things,” stated Northern College President and CEO, Dr. Fred Gibbons. “Whether in the fields of technology and engineering to business, community services and Health Sciences.”
