Northern College Innovation Hub Contributes to Student Success

September 25, 2018

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is pleased to report the continued success of its Department of Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Through industry partnership, student enthusiasm and faculty help, the Department’s Innovation Hub has provided a creative spring board for dozens of students.

“We went from supporting 8 entrepreneurs in 2016 to 33 in 2018 and 2 applied research projects to 14,” said Amy McKillip Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Manager. “The growth has allowed us to become a staple at Northern and in our surrounding communities.”

By providing aspiring entrepreneurs access to industry knowledge, research and development space, the Innovation Hub is working hard to meet the needs of the ever-changing economy, both regionally and worldwide.

“The industry needs our students, faculty expertise, facilities and resources to help develop their innovative solutions or ideas,” said McKillip. “The Innovation Hub branding will allow for better visibility and is a name that people can remember.”

Students taking advantage of the Innovation Hub are already succeeding with industry altering ideas. Third year electrical students developed a self-healing communication system for use underground; a joint project with two industry partners.

“It was a fun and exciting event I will remember fondly,” said Ryan Lalonde, a student involved in the project.

The Innovation Hub symbolizes Northern College’s continued commitment to providing quality, cutting edge education to its students in an experiential learning environment.

“Experiential learning opportunities like these help give our graduates a strong competitive advantage as they transition into the workforce bringing value-added skills and experiences,” stated Dr. Fred Gibbons, President and CEO of Northern College.

By investing in students and faculty while strengthening ties with local industry Northern College continues to develop new and exciting ways to give our graduates the advantage when they enter in to the working world.
