Northern College Adds New Human Resources Graduate Programming to Meet Growing Demand

October 8, 2019

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is pleased to announce the creation of a new graduate program for its School of Business and Office Administration.

Accommodation and Human Rights Management is a one year three semester Ontario College Graduate Certificate offered to students for Northern College’s fall 2020 semester. This new program was developed as part of a collaboration between Ontario’s six Northern Colleges, designed to fill a growing training gap in the specialized areas of human rights, disability management and accommodations.

“The world of work is changing rapidly and the need to assure skilled labor means more attention to accommodating those who face workplace challenges,” stated Dr. Audrey Penner, Northern College’s Vice President of Academic and Student Success. “The need for this program was clearly identified in our labor market research and we are excited to co deliver with our Northern Partners.”

Northern College is pleased to offer this program designed to equip students with the key, high-demand industry skills required for human resource professionals who manage compliance with national and provincial employment legislation to understand and respond to the increasing number of accommodations in the workplace.

The program prepares graduates to delve deeper into the fields of social science, law and human resources and focus on topics such as human rights, mediation, alternate dispute resolution, disability management and advocacy while facilitating a placement through which students can put these concepts to work in real world scenarios.

Unique to Ontario, this program will allow Northern College to continue to offer students in demand pathways to employment that may not have been possible without pooling resources through the Northern Colleges Collaboration Program.

“The number and type of workplace accommodations has grown exponentially over the past few years,” stated Penner. “Assuring everyone has an opportunity to meet their potential is a core tenant of this program.”
