Northern College Celebrates First In-Person Convocation Ceremonies in Two Years

June 3, 2022

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is pleased to celebrate the achievements of its graduates with traditional, in-person convocation ceremonies at each of its campuses.

After a long hiatus, graduates were welcomed to celebrate their achievements with their peers and loved ones, able to cross the stage, receive their diplomas and experience the culmination of their studies with Northern.

“This has been such a pleasure for all of us here at Northern,” stated Dr. Audrey J. Penner, Northern College President & CEO. “These past two year have been difficult for our students and for a good portion of our grads this year, this return to relative normalcy marks the culmination of their perseverance as many of them completed their studies under the most difficult of conditions.”

1,112 graduates crossed the stage across Northern College’s four campuses, alongside 327 graduates from the past two year who chose to take advantage of Northern’s open offer to grads from 2020 and 2021 to attend an in-person ceremony when it became possible.

“It is very important to us that every one of our graduates were given the opportunity to participate in this wonderful moment of achievement,” stated Susan Hunter, Northern College’s Chief Cultural Officer. “We did what we could with what we had, celebrating our graduates virtually and we’re proud of what we achieved given the circumstances, but it is incredibly important to all of us at Northern that our grads are given the chance to take part in this wonderful ceremony.”

To ensure that graduates first step into their career path is a stable one, Northern College and its generous donors issued 138,915 dollars in bursaries to 192 deserving graduates who displayed excellence, perseverance and dedication.

“We are deeply committed to supporting our students throughout their time with Northern, especially as they take this first step into the working world,” stated Nicole Gingras, Northern College’s Alumni & Foundation Officer. “Thanks to our generous donors and good financial investments, we were able to issue over a million dollars in awards and bursaries last year, we are fully committed to student success right up to the moment they leave our halls.”

Northern College congratulates its graduates on a job well done, on the barriers they’ve overcome and the tenacity they’ve shown over these truly difficult years.

“A helping hand, generosity and caring leaves a lasting impression and we want our grads to leave this school smiling, and not just because they are proud of their achievements,” stated Dr. Penner. “More than anything, we want them to know that we are incredibly proud of them too.”
