TIMMINS, ON: Northern College hosted a team of researchers from the University of Toronto and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) who arrived in Timmins today for a four-day visit to continue their research on the billion-year-old water discovered over two kilometers below the surface of the earth, believed to be the world’s oldest water ever found.

This marks the first visit from JAMSTEC and the fourth time Northern College has worked with the researchers from the University of Toronto, who travelled to Timmins in January 2017 to collect additional water samples and retrieve bio-filters placed underground during a previous visit in July 2016.

Before heading underground, the team gave a presentation on the research at the Timmins Campus. The University of Toronto researchers shared an overview of the span of the project and the impacts regarding the next level of research, while JAMSTEC presented their scientific goals in investigating the abundance of life in the old fracture waters.

Northern College embraces collaborative partnerships with community stakeholders and industry and strives to deliver real-world solutions that stimulate social and economic growth in the region and beyond. The AREI department serves as a gateway for external partners seeking to work with the College on applied research and for internal employees and students seeking to utilize their research skills.
