Northern College Invests over $100,000 in Students

December 6, 2019

TIMMINS, ON: Northern College is ringing in the holidays in a big way, looking to help students at its Timmins Campus celebrate the season.

Over the course of 12 days, Northern College will be giving away a total of $34,000 to students attending classes at the Timmins Campus starting December 2. To qualify for the new bursaries, students are required to write a 300-word essay about their Northern Experience which will serve as their ballot when the bursaries are drawn.

“We all know that the holiday season can be stressful for everyone, especially our students,” said Nicole Gingras, Northern College’s Foundation and Alumni Development Officer. “With this in mind, we wanted to take steps to ease some of those stressors as the fall semester ends and remind students that hard work pays off.”

This promotion is only one part of a larger, college wide effort which has seen over $100,000 in bursaries issued to students, further cementing Northern College’s commitment to student success through positive reinforcement and support.

“By offering bursaries to our students with this kind of frequency, we are demonstrating that Northern College is a post-secondary institution that cares about student success,” said Financial Aid Officer Amanda Farrow. “To succeed in a college environment, our students need to be able to focus on their studies and with many of our students working to continue supporting their educational goals, any effort we can make to assist them is a priority for us.”

Student support efforts like these would not be possible without generous contributions from Northern College’s network of donors.

“Every dollar that we grant to students has to come from somewhere,” said Gingras. “Thankfully our College is based in close-knit communities filled with people and organizations who see the importance of supporting students looking to better themselves through education. One of these donors, Sherri Jones, is hosting a bake sale on December 11th on the Timmins campus that she does each year to raise funds for students. This is only one example of many of community members who go the distance for us.”

Northern College is dedicated to providing the highest quality education to its students, ensuring they have all of the tools they need to succeed.
