Northern College’s Practical Nursing Program Receives Top Marks from CNO
TIMMINS, ON: Northern College’s Practical Nursing program has received top marks from the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Northern received the highest possible rating during the CNO’s latest review of the program, earning the program a Category 1: Approved status.
All practical nursing programs in Ontario require CNO approval in order to operate. The process ensures that colleges across the province are delivering programming that meets or exceeds the standards established by the CNO. These competencies assure employers that all graduates in the province possess the same knowledge and skills to practice as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), regardless of where they have studied.
The CNO program approval review process includes an in-depth analysis of a program’s curriculum, entrance exam, and some key performance indicators. Indicators include graduation rate, graduate and student satisfaction rate, and graduate performance on the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE). Northern’s program met CNO expectations in all areas of review.
“Our high approval rating could not have been attained without the hard work of our faculty and staff, the exceptional college labs, the placement opportunities within health care agencies, and through the vision, leadership, and commitment to nursing excellence of Shelly Hosman, the Program Coordinator at the Timmins Campus,” said Sarah Campbell, Associate Dean of Health Sciences and Emergency Services at Northern College.
The achievement of Northern’s Practical Nursing program is also reflected in the most recent set of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) results for the May/June 2016 session, in which the passing rate for Northern College students was 100 percent.
