Northern College Emergency Services students successfully completed Operation: Stair Climb, a 24-hour marathon endeavour, walking 100,000 steps and raising 1,325 dollars the annual Timmins Victim’s Services Toy Drive. From left to right: Rick Lemieux, Police Foundations Program Coordinator, Arshdeep Singh, Police Foundations Student, Christine Raycraft, Dean of Business and Community Services and Mikaela Woods, Timmins Victim’s Services.

Over the course of 24 hours, almost 100 students from the Police Foundations, Pre-Service Fire and Paramedic programs travelled over 100,000 steps to ensure that local children enduring the toughest of times can enjoy a happy holiday.

“Our programs and our students have participated in the Timmins Victim’s Services Toy Drive for many years,” stated Rick Lemieux, Program Coordinator for Police Foundations at Northern. “This community is so generous and supportive of what we’re trying to do, they know the value of the assistance available to families through Victim’s Services and how important a happy holiday can be for those families.”

Traditionally, Lemieux and his students accept donations from shoppers outside of local outlets, but this year, students will be augmenting those donations with funds raised through the stair climb.

“We are so grateful and appreciative of the response and giving in this community, they make many donations, year after year,” stated Lemieux. “The difficulty lies in ensuring that kids of all ages have access to age-appropriate gifts, by raising additional money, we can better tailor what we’re able to give.”

Students were supported in their marathon stair climb by members of the Northern College faculty, staff and administrators.

“Initiatives like this are incredibly important to us as an institution,” stated Mitch Dumas, President & CEO at Northern. “Any chance for our students and staff to play a role in making a difference in our communities is a welcome one, which deserves the full support of our institution.”

With students on a career path to engage with, protect and serve the wider community, opportunities like this are intrinsic to preparing them for their future career.

“These are career focused students, they are driven to gain the skills they need to succeed after they graduate, to join the workforce and set about making a difference,” stated Christine Raycraft, Dean of Business and Community Services at Northern. “Opportunities like these celebrate community involvement, promote community connection and instill the core values of community service-based volitions.”

“We are so proud of our students and the contributions they so readily make to this community that many of them have come to call home only recently,” added Raycraft.

Donations remain open until December 6, those wishing to contribute to this great cause can do so here.
