To bridge the gap between field experience and the business of OHS within organizations, professional certification may be the solution. In a discipline as scrutinized as OHS, organizations are relying on qualified health and safety professionals to expertly advise on compliance with evolving provincial and federal regulations.
The University of Fredericton’s Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental Systems (COHSES) program is considered to be a “part of the pathway” to becoming an established Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) professional. Graduates of the program learn how to bridge the gap and effectively communicate their plans at both the worker level and the managerial and executive level.
This entire certificate program consists of self-paced material. Students progress through the program in 8-week terms and will receive guidance and feedback from a Faculty Member.
All courses in University of Fredericton’s COHSES program focus on a process-based approach to Occupational Health and Safety. The curriculum is not limited to a jurisdiction’s legislative framework; rather, it is a far-reaching collection of ‘best practices’ as identified by OHS professionals from a wide range of jurisdictions and legislative backgrounds.
Regulatory bodies are working to standardize how occupational health and safety is practiced in Canada. As the demand for OHS professionals continues to grow, elevated qualifications have been put in place to raise the standard of national OHS practice.
To pursue professional certification, individuals must complement their industry experience with professional development and education. HS1270 Introduction to OHSE – $404.75
This course deals with extending the responsibilities of safety program policy and administration in organizational cultures. In some jurisdictions, “joint safety committees” are a regulatory requirement, while in others, they are a vehicle to improve corporate culture and enhance mutual trust/respect across the hierarchy. Those in roles responsible for producing results for the safety program require a rich understanding of the human qualities of communication, trust, power-sharing, and engagement, regardless of whether an issue is compliance or policy-related.
HS1310 Organizational Development & Behaviour – $404.75
This course introduces the basic concepts of management and organizational behaviour in the context of using those concepts for the strategic development of occupational health, safety, and environmental processes within an organization.
HS1290 Leadership & Communication – $404.75
Learn the language of communication, the power of ethical messaging, and how thoughtful design is essential to leading in an OHS workplace. In this course, students will learn the elements of communication, the history of management models, leadership styles, and how strong business relationships are fundamental to an effective OHS agenda.
HS1250 Incident Investigation & Response – $404.75
This course introduces the basic concepts of incident causation and investigation with the intention of using those concepts for the strategic development of occupational health, safety and environmental processes within an organizational context. Students will learn how to apply the content to a wide variety of industrial and commercial settings, as well as many different types of organizations.
HS1330 Safety Training: An Introduction to the Fundamental Principles – $533.00
People, sometimes referred to as human capital, are the most underutilized resource in the developed world. People are our most valuable resource, yet we often do not do a good job of equipping them with the intellectual and practical skills they need to perform optimally. In this course, students learn effective workplace training tools and the ability to implement intelligent training strategies that are key for effective leadership.
HS1320 Safety Management Systems – $789.50
A requirement of any management system is the ability to prevent losses to the organization’s resources. In most jurisdictions, a primary focus of any safety program is compliance with regulatory standards. This is typically an ineffective approach to reducing workplace losses. The field of health and safety has matured and offers a variety of approaches to accomplish this prevention goal.
HS1240 Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Controls – $789.50
In this course, students learn several basic risk assessment tools and the skills necessary to mitigate risk proactively. Students will learn how to apply these tools by becoming familiar with the process, needed resources, and practical examples for various methods. The intended outcome for these tools and skills is to foster collaboration with stakeholders to identify and prioritize workplace risks.
HS1280 Law and Ethics – $533.00
Litigation for workplace losses can reach into the corporate boardroom, and cut deeply into the corporate treasury. This course offers the basic principles of applying due to diligence, as well as compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
HS1260 Industrial/Occupational Hygiene – $789.50
Workplaces typically represent many unseen but highly hazardous risks, including air quality, sound pressures, temperature extremes, workstation design, and more. Knowing basic identification and management principles to deal with these common workplace hazards will enable a more effective health, safety and environmental management program.
HS1220 Fire Management – $789.50
This course is meant to broaden one’s knowledge and skills in fire safety. It will cover the standards and requirements for a Fire Prevention and Management Program and a range of fire prevention, protection and suppression systems.
HS1210 Environmental Management – $533.00
One of the most important challenges facing this generation is learning the skills that enable appropriate stewardship of our environment. An effective health, safety and environmental management program integrates stewardship of people, property, environment and processes into one seamless entity
HS1230 Fundamentals of Auditing – $789.50
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have an in depth overview of the principles of auditing as well as an appreciation of audit instruments. The theory and practice of performing the essential steps of a health and safety audit will also be covered.
HS2000 Graded Practicum – $789.50
Upon completion of the courses (or equivalent), students will undertake a Guided Practicum. Here, students will choose from six options, including development of a comprehensive program in a particular context, a detailed program addressing a particular risk issue, development of a business case for their current OHS Program, either one of two Minerva Case studies to perform a detailed analysis, or creating a presentation or another similar option. The Practicum will be evaluated based on the application of context from the courses, additional research, and the utility of the project. Students will be coached through the entire process, starting with a review of a proposal, and feedback at key points through the project.

The Integrated Disability Management program from the University of Fredericton is designed for professionals and practitioners working in the field of disability management, or who are seeking to pursue disability management as a career option. Students come into this certificate program with workplace experience or an interest in disability management or a related field.
The program enables participants to attain the knowledge, skills, tools, and practical application experience, to succeed in their workplace as a Disability Management Practitioner with options to pursue either a Certificate or Diploma in Disability Management.
The courses in this program all have weekly virtual classes that students must attend (attendance is mandatory) with the professor and other students. They are provided in 8-week terms with specified assignment and quiz dates.

The Ergonomics program at the University of Fredericton prepares learners to initiate, implement, and document projects through scientifically-based guidelines. The program is designed to enable safety personnel and health professionals to deal with ergonomic issues that often arise in the workplace, often due to poor workstation design.
This comprehensive ergonomics certificate introduces an integrated approach to Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD) prevention by applying major North American ergonomic guidelines to the curriculum.

Delivery: All mandatory virtual classes can be attended in the evening from anywhere with internet access. Not only do most of our students continue working full time with their current organization: many are able to have their tuition covered by their current employer – an arrangement that often results in advancement during study as a result of new skills.
Certification: The most widely recognized professional certification in Canada is the CRSP, which is governed by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP). To write the CRSP examination, OHS professionals must satisfy prerequisites, which include a minimum of 900 hours of education. University of Fredericton’s CRSP Pathway not only satisfies this requirement, but effectively empowers OHS professionals to be heard within their industry, earning them “a seat at the table” to merge their abilities with an organization’s business goals.
