Northern College celebrates 91K donation to the Haileybury School of Mines
HAILEYBURY, ON: Northern College is pleased to announce the generous donation of equipment to the Automation and Control Engineering department at the Haileybury School of Mines (HSM) by Endress + Hauser, a Sweden based operating process, laboratory instrumentation and automation supplier.

From left to right: Jamie Johnston, Dean of Mining, Trades, Technology and Apprenticeship, Professor James Edwards, Professor Brian Dobbs, Program Coordinator Joshua Dubois, Dean Rudd of Endress + Hauser, Steve Dickinson and Jainil Panchal of Synergy Solutions. Both Rudd and Dickinson are proud HSM Alumni.
Facilitated by Steven Dickinson – a member of HSM Alumni, this donation will contribute greatly to providing Automation and Control Engineering students the hands-on experience they need to excel in their chosen field.
“Our goal as educators is to ensure that our students are well prepared to enter the workforce after graduation,” stated Joshua Dubois, Automation & Control Engineering Program Coordinator. “The reputation of our program and the success of our graduates is entirely rooted in this approach to education; an approach that has long been made possible by the generosity and involvement of our proud alumni.”
This attitude and approach have defined the Haileybury School of Mines throughout its storied history; obvious in the quality and variety of training equipment accessible to students and the legacy built by thousands of dedicated alumni.
“All of our programs are informed by the experiences and perspectives of our alumni members,” stated Jamie Johnston, Dean of Mining, Trades, Technology and Apprenticeship. “Nowhere is this more impactful and present than in HSM, where alumni are actively shaping the future of our programs through generous donations like this, input in program development and active feedback on program quality and consistency.”
The donated equipment, worth over ninety-one thousand dollars includes magnetic and vortex flowmeters, FMCW Radar and guided-wave radar level, analytical and pressure transmitters. Equipment like this plays a key role in keeping the program technologically current.
With projected demand for Automation & Control engineering professionals rising across key sectors, nation building projects on the horizon and a shortage of skilled workers, engaged and supportive alumni contributing to the quality of training equipment ensures that Northern and HSM remain both relevant and appealing to prospective students.
“We often say that our institution is defined by our alumni, by their successes and accomplishments as the ultimate ambassadors for our institution,” stated Nicole Gingras, External Relations Officer at Northern. “When we have moments like this – where alumni are willing to make significant contributions in playing a direct role in shaping the next generation of their peers – this HSM is how we know that we’ve truly created an environment where our students understand the value of community, support and giving back,” added Gingras.
Northern College and the Haileybury School of Mines extend their sincere thanks to Endress + Hauser, Synergy Control and Steven Dickinson for their contributions to the Automation & Control Engineering program and to the countless alumni who have played a role in shaping and supporting programming at Northern.
