Surveying 101 provides a comprehensive introduction to the foundational principles, instruments, and methods used in modern land surveying. Designed for beginners, this course blends theory with practical, hands-on learning to build confidence in measuring, mapping, and interpreting the physical world.
Students will explore essential surveying tools – from traditional levels and tapes to total stations, GNSS receivers, and digital mapping technologies. Through guided field exercises, learners will practice core techniques, including distance measurement, angle observation, elevation determination, and basic site layout.
A key component of the course is understanding terrain. Students will learn how to read and create topographic maps, work with contour lines, and assess how natural and built environments influence measurement strategies. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, safety, field procedures, and real-world applications across construction, engineering, resource management, and environmental planning.

Delivery: This course runs from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday over two weeks, for a total of 40 hours (20 hours per week).
