The Department of Applied Research, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (AREI) hosts the Innovation Hub to conduct innovative product, process, and service prototyping and testing that enhances industry competitiveness and boosts regional economic development while serving as an experiential learning and resource hub for our students and the broader community.
Our facilities include:
The 3D Printing Lab at the Timmins Campus features a multitude of printers with the ability to print in nylon, resin, carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, and even stainless steel.
The BigRep STUDIO is an easy-to-use, large-format 3D printer specially designed for industrial applications using engineering-grade materials.
Students will learn that the BigRep STUDIO is a durable and cost-effective way to manufacture large-format, quality parts. The STUDIO boasts a generous build volume of 1000 x 500 x 500 mm, 10 times that of standard desktop 3D printers. Featuring a fully enclosed build envelope and temperature-controlled filament chamber, students can learn to produce incredible results with advanced materials. Its high-flow STUDIO Dual Extruder (SDX) is equipped with two 0.6 mm nozzles optimal for printing geometrically complex parts with ASA, ABS, water-soluble support, and abrasive materials like carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic quickly and reliably.
The Connex3 empowers students to create multi-colour, multi-material models whenever needed.
Students can explore the world of multi-material colour 3D printing. They can create brilliantly coloured prototypes to fit many application needs, whether translucent, rigid or thermal-resistant.
The Form 3BL can 3D Print Large Medical Devices and Anatomic Replicas at Full Scale for medical professionals. This 3D printer is compatible with the majority of the Formlabs SLA materials library, including biocompatible, sterilizable materials.
The Form 3BL is large enough to print full-size anatomy and medical devices with a 19.4” diagonal, print adult femurs, pelvic bones, skulls, and more at 1:1 scale.
Students will be able to print large parts requiring biocompatibility and sterilization compatibility, full-size anatomical models at a 1:1 scale, including pediatric and adult anatomy, medical device prototypes, jigs, fixtures, assemblies, and end-use parts, surgeon-specific or patient-specific surgical tools, and surgical planning models for diagnostic use in FDA-cleared workflows.
